A true FBO (Full Bolt-On) build requires more than a high-flow downpipe, upgraded charge pipes, and a custom ECU calibration. When running higher boost levels, upgrading the intercooler system is essential for maintaining stable intake temperatures, protecting performance consistency, and ensuring reliable engine operation.
Competition EVO 2 Overview
The Wagner EVO2 competition intercooler features a stepped core measuring 520 × 210 × 150 mm, providing a total core volume of 13,572 cm³. Compared with the original factory intercooler, it offers approximately 85% more frontal cooling surface and 90% greater internal charge air capacity, resulting in significantly improved thermal efficiency.
The advanced Tube & Fin core design includes integrated internal turbulators that optimize airflow distribution throughout the core while increasing overall cooling performance.
Despite its significantly larger dimensions, the complete intercooler weighs only 7.4 kg. Precision-cast aluminum end tanks were engineered through advanced CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations to maximize airflow efficiency and minimize restrictions. The original quick-connect fittings have been replaced with larger 70 mm inlet and outlet connections, while the kit includes two reinforced silicone hoses designed specifically for the upgraded configuration.
Developed for BMW N54 and N55 platforms, the EVO 2 provides excellent cooling capability combined with very low pressure drop characteristics. Each Wagner EVO 2 competition intercooler receives a thermally conductive anti-corrosion coating that improves heat transfer efficiency, enhances durability, and supports consistent performance during demanding driving conditions.
Every intercooler undergoes pressure testing up to 6 bar to verify reliable operation under elevated boost pressures. Strict quality control procedures throughout production ensure the durability and performance standards expected from a motorsport-oriented component.
The kit is supplied as a complete replacement solution for the factory intercooler. Depending on the vehicle application, minor installation adjustments may be required to achieve perfect fitment. Vehicles equipped with the M Sport Package may require slight trimming of the lower underbody panel.
Our Recommendation
The Wagner Competition Series utilizes lightweight Tube & Fin cores engineered for extremely rapid heat dissipation. Once operating temperatures increase, the intercooler is capable of recovering heat quickly, making it highly effective for demanding street and performance driving conditions.
However, compared with Bar & Plate intercooler designs, Tube & Fin cores can absorb heat more quickly. On vehicles running significantly increased boost pressure, this may result in intake temperatures reaching the ECU ignition correction threshold sooner during extended high-load operation.
