A proper FBO (Full Bolt-On) setup consists not only of a high-flow downpipe, reinforced charge pipes, and a custom ECU calibration, but also of a larger intercooler.
Manufacturer Description
The high-performance intercooler features a stepped core measuring 520 × 210 × 130 mm with a total core volume of 11,750 cm³. Compared to the factory intercooler (510 × 130 × 110 mm, 7,293 cm³), it provides a 64% larger frontal cooling area and 60% greater charge air volume.
The Competition high-performance core uses a premium Tube & Fin design with integrated internal turbulators. Thanks to this lightweight construction, the complete intercooler weighs only 6.6 kg.
The cast aluminum end tanks have been optimized using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) flow analysis.
The EVO 1 intercooler kit is designed for the initial performance stages of BMW turbocharged engines. It produces less pressure drop than the factory intercooler, improving cooling efficiency while maintaining excellent airflow.
In addition, every Wagner intercooler features a heat-conductive anti-corrosion coating, ensuring long-lasting durability, optimal cooling performance, and noticeable power gains.
The intercooler has been pressure-tested to 6 bar and is designed to withstand high boost pressures. All Wagner products undergo continuous quality control. This version is now supplied with a TÜV Parts Approval Certificate for many vehicle applications.
The kit is supplied ready for installation and replaces the factory intercooler without modifications. Installation is completely plug-and-play, and the original charge pipes can be reused.
Our Recommendation
The Wagner Competition Series uses high-quality Tube & Fin cores that provide very fast heat transfer. This allows the intercooler to cool down quickly after reaching operating temperature.
However, Tube & Fin cores also heat up faster than heavier Bar & Plate designs. As a result, vehicles running higher boost pressures can reach the ignition timing reduction threshold more quickly.

We recommend the EVO 1 Competition intercooler for Stage 1 performance upgrades or vehicles that remain at factory power levels.
