One component that eventually needs to be upgraded on virtually all turbocharged BMW engines as power levels increase is the fuel supply system.
The S55 engine features one of the most capable factory fuel systems BMW has ever produced. Its high-pressure fuel system is capable of supporting approximately 750 HP, thanks to the fact that the S55 is equipped with what is essentially two N55 high-pressure fuel pumps.
The interesting part is that the high-pressure fuel pumps are capable of supplying more fuel than the factory fuel injectors can deliver.
This is where the BMW M5 fuel injectors come into play as an effective upgrade.
The limitation of the factory S55 injectors is that, beyond a certain power level, they can no longer remain open long enough to supply the required amount of fuel. As a result, the target lambda value can no longer be maintained, even though the high-pressure fuel system is still capable of supplying sufficient fuel pressure.
For this reason, if you plan to run more than 700 HP on an S55 engine, upgrading to BMW M5 fuel injectors is highly recommended.
