A proper FBO (Full Bolt-On) setup is about more than a flow-optimised downpipe, stable charge-air piping and the right tune. A larger intercooler always belongs in the package too.

For a long time we focused only on the petrol engines and left the diesel crowd out entirely. That changes now, and we are adding tuning parts for the “particulate” fraction as well.

On any turbocharged engine, raising boost as part of a remap pushes the charge-air system to temperature too quickly, and that costs power. From around 120°F intake air temperature (IAT), just under 50°C, the ECU starts cutting the injected fuel quantity (exact point depends on the application), and the result is falling power. With an undersized intercooler, that 50°C intake temperature is often reached after just two or three hard gears, especially on hot days.

That is why we now offer upgrade intercoolers for your N47 118/120/123d and 320d.

A Better Heart for the Charge System

The part that sits between the turbo and the engine on these diesels has a quiet but vital job: cooling the compressed air so the engine can actually use it. The factory piece does it adequately when new and cold, and poorly the moment the car is driven with any intent. An uprated N47 intercooler is a properly engineered replacement, not merely a larger one, built to cool the charge air harder while letting it flow more freely on its way to the inlet. Get that balance right and the whole engine feels crisper, more willing, and more consistent, whatever you ask of it.

More Than Just Bigger

Size alone does not make a good intercooler; how it is built does. A well-made 320d intercooler uses a dense, efficient core and carefully shaped end tanks so that air is cooled evenly across its whole face rather than racing through the middle and stagnating at the edges. The result is lower, steadier intake temperatures without the restriction a crude oversized unit can introduce. It is the difference between a part that simply looks the part and one that genuinely does the job, and it is where quality engineering earns its place.

Flow Without the Pressure Drop

There is a trap with intercoolers that a good design avoids. Cool the air too aggressively through a restrictive core and you lose pressure on the way through, which hands back much of what you gained. The core here is shaped to shed heat while keeping that pressure drop low, so the turbo's effort reaches the engine intact. That matters for response as much as for outright power: the engine answers the throttle more promptly because the air it needs arrives cool, dense, and under the pressure the turbo actually made.

From the Economy Diesel Up

One of the strengths of this kit is how much of the range it suits. A 120d intercooler of this design serves far more than a single model, covering the family from the frugal everyday cars to the sportiest of them:

  • The economical 118d and the stronger 120d
  • The high-output twin-turbo 123d
  • The 320d across the E90 range of bodies
  • Both the E8x hatches and the E9x saloons and estates

Even the most economy-minded owner benefits, since cooler, denser air helps the engine work more efficiently rather than fighting its own heat.

Built Around the E90 and Its Siblings

This is a direct-fit part, designed to make the upgrade painless. An E90 320d intercooler of this kind sits in the factory location and connects to the existing pipework with no cutting or fabrication, bolting in with ordinary hand tools. Check out our other N47 intercoolers and build the cooling setup your engine deserves. Because the N47 cars were made in several forms, confirm your exact model, engine, and year before ordering, and it will drop straight in as cleanly as its construction suggests.

FAQ

Does the 118d take the same intercooler as the 120d/123d/320d?
These N47 diesels are closely related, but fitment can still vary by model. Confirm your exact car, since the 118d is not always identical.
Will a bigger core add turbo lag on the diesel?
A larger core holds a little more air, which can slightly soften response. A well-matched size keeps any lag minimal while improving cooling.
Does a cooler charge help reduce diesel smoke?
Cooler, denser air can support cleaner combustion under load. It helps, though smoke also depends on tuning and condition.
Does an upgraded intercooler improve fuel economy?
Any economy change is minor and depends on how you drive. The main benefit is steadier temperatures rather than saving fuel.
Is it a sensible upgrade for a daily-driven diesel?
It is a reliable upgrade that mainly helps when the engine works hard. For gentle daily use the gain is modest.
Will it help on long motorway runs or towing?
Sustained load is exactly where a bigger intercooler keeps temperatures stable. That makes it useful for motorway cruising and towing.
