The high-pressure fuel system is not only the limiting factor on the N54 engine. BMW uses a different type of high-pressure fuel pump on the B58 engine, but unfortunately, this pump also becomes a performance bottleneck as power levels increase.
Alongside the proven Dorch upgrades, it became clear shortly after the release of the B58TU engine (found in vehicles such as the Toyota Supra) that its factory high-pressure fuel pump is capable of supporting significantly more power than the pump used in standard B58 engines. As a result, it has become a popular upgrade for earlier B58-powered vehicles.
In most cases, the factory high-pressure fuel pump on the B58 Gen 1 engine reaches its limit at around 480 HP. If you plan to make more power, for example with a turbo upgrade, improving the fuel system is essential.
Depending on the type of fuel used, the Supra B58TU high-pressure fuel pump can support up to 600 HP at its limit. This makes it an ideal upgrade for vehicles equipped with a fully maxed-out OEM turbocharger, a Stage 1 turbo, or even a Stage 2 turbocharger when combined with supporting modifications such as water/methanol injection (WMI).
