A proper FBO (Full Bolt-On) setup consists not only of a high-flow downpipe, reinforced charge pipes, and a custom ECU calibration, but also of a larger intercooler.
Why Upgrade Your Intercooler?
Throughout the various performance stages we tested on the N54 and N55 engines, we gained extensive experience with different intercoolers.
Increasing the boost pressure on any turbocharged engine causes the charge air system to reach temperatures that eventually lead to a reduction in engine performance.
Once the intake air temperature (IAT) reaches approximately 120°F (around 50°C), the engine control unit—depending on the calibration—switches to a more conservative ignition map to help prevent misfires. As a result, engine power decreases.
With smaller intercoolers, this 50°C intake air temperature is often reached after accelerating through only two or three gears, especially during hot summer conditions.
Our intercooler is built around a massive Bar & Plate core, which reacts much more slowly to temperature fluctuations and delivers outstanding thermal stability under sustained load.
Developed Specifically for the N55
Following the tremendous success and overwhelmingly positive feedback received for our 7.5" Bar & Plate intercooler for the N54 platform, we had long wanted to offer an equally effective solution for the N55.
That solution is now available.
Our new 7" intercooler for the N55 features a core based on the same proven design as our popular N54 intercooler. Unlike the N54 version, however, no trimming or modification of the plastic components behind the front bumper is required during installation.
We tested several different intercooler cores on the N55 platform, and the version offered here consistently delivered the best overall performance.
This intercooler is recommended for enthusiasts who don't mind adding a little extra weight to the front axle. Weighing approximately 13.5 kg (29.8 lbs), it rewards that additional weight by keeping intake air temperatures under control even in ambient temperatures of around 30°C (86°F).
Real-World Test Results
Vehicle:
FBO Stage 2 BMW M235i running on 98 RON fuel
Ambient temperature:
Approximately 10°C
Starting intake air temperature:
17.2°C
Temperature at the end of the pull:
22.2°C
Test conditions:
Acceleration from 3rd gear through 6th gear, ending at 5,700 RPM in 6th gear.
Total intake air temperature increase:
Only 5°C after accelerating through three gears.
Comparison
Before installing our intercooler, the vehicle was equipped with a popular intercooler from a well-known German manufacturer.
Under the same testing conditions, including identical ambient temperatures and acceleration from 4th to 6th gear, the measured intake air temperature increase was approximately 15°C.
Fitment Information
This intercooler is not a direct plug-and-play fit for convertible models.

German approval documentation includes BMW F2x, F3x, F87, M135i, M235i, 335i, 435i, and M2 N55 F-Series models together with the corresponding vehicle types and EC type approval numbers for the 55Parts 7" Race Intercooler with Parts Approval Certificate.
