New B-series engines (B38/218i, B48/20i, B58/40i) use water-cooled charge air, like the S55. An intercooler in the intake manifold cools air via water, kept cool by a front radiator ahead of the main coolant radiator.

Two circuits:

  • High-temp: 80–120°C (engine)
  • Low-temp: 10–60°C (charge air)

Since no manifold-cooler upgrade exists yet, this front radiator is the fix.

Upgrade features:

  • Tube & fin core
  • +4L water volume
  • Max-size core for the chassis
  • Aluminum end tanks (vs. stock plastic)
  • Replaces part 17118741830

Test results (M240i, Pure800, W/M injection, ~650hp, 5°C ambient, 10 pulls in 4th gear 2,000–6,800rpm):

  • Stock radiator: up to 35°C
  • Upgrade radiator: up to 26°C

Fits:

  • B38 F22/F23 218i
  • B48 F2x/F3x 18i/20i/25i/30i
  • B58 F2x/F3x 40i

Keep the Intake Charge Genuinely Cold

Not every BMW cools its charge air with a front-mounted core. On the B48 and B58 engines in the F2x and F3x cars, the intercooler is water-cooled: a compact charge cooler on the intake sheds heat into a coolant loop, and that coolant is cooled in turn by a dedicated radiator at the front. Upgrading that radiator is one of the smartest cooling moves you can make. A larger chargecooler radiator gives the whole circuit more capacity, holding intake temperatures down when the standard system would otherwise heat-soak. It works directly with the B58 intercooler it feeds.

How the Water Circuit Works

It helps to understand the layout. Instead of pushing boost through a long front-mounted core, these engines run a small air-to-water intercooler right on the intake, which reacts quickly and keeps the pipework short. The heat it absorbs is carried away by coolant and released by a front radiator. That means the coolant loop, rather than the intercooler itself, is often what limits sustained cooling, and that is exactly what this part sets out to address.

Why the Stock One Heat-Soaks

The factory radiator is sized for standard use, not repeated hard pulls. On a tuned car, a track day, or a long hot climb, the coolant carries away more heat than the standard radiator can shed, so its temperature creeps upward. As the coolant warms, the intercooler can no longer cool the charge as well, and intake temperatures climb with it. A bigger, more efficient charge cooler radiator breaks that cycle, keeping the loop cooler so the intercooler stays effective when it matters.

The Gain on a Tuned or Tracked Car

This is where it earns its place. With more radiator capacity, the circuit resists heat-soak, so the engine holds consistent intake temperatures and, with them, consistent power run after run. A stock, gently driven car may rarely need it, but add boost, add heat, or drive hard, and an upgraded B58 radiator becomes one of the highest-value cooling parts on the car, precisely because it protects everything the tune relies on.

Fits the F2x and F3x Range

Because the same basic system is shared widely, one well-designed part covers a lot of ground. A quality water to air intercooler radiator of this kind suits:

  • The B58 six in the 40i models across the F2x and F3x range
  • The B48 four in the 18i through 30i cars
  • Both saloon and coupe body styles on those platforms

Even so, confirm your exact model and year before ordering, since mounting and connections can vary, and check that it is listed as a direct fit for your car.

A Direct-Fit Cooling Upgrade

The best part is how cleanly it goes in. This kind of radiator is made to replace the factory unit in its original location, connecting to the existing circuit without cutting or fabrication, so it is a straightforward job. Once it is fitted and the system is bled properly, there is nothing to think about day-to-day: it simply gives the charge-cooling circuit the headroom it needs, quietly, on every drive.

FAQ

What does this radiator do in the water-cooled intercooler circuit?
It cools the coolant that in turn cools the charge air in the water-to-air intercooler loop. An upgraded one helps keep charge temperatures lower under sustained load.
Does it fit the 18i to 40i range on both B48 and B58?
It targets the F2x and F3x cars across the 18i to 40i engines using the B48 and B58. Confirm your exact model and engine, since fitment varies across such a wide span.
Does it replace the factory low-temperature radiator or add to it?
It replaces the original low-temperature radiator in the intercooler circuit rather than adding a separate unit. Confirm it matches your car's circuit layout before fitting.
Does the coolant circuit need bleeding after fitting?
The circuit should be refilled and bled so no air is trapped after install. Proper bleeding keeps the intercooler loop working as intended.
Does a bigger circuit radiator help with heat soak?
A larger radiator sheds more heat, which resists the charge-air heat soak that saps power on hot days or repeated pulls. The benefit is clearest under sustained hard driving.
Is this upgrade worthwhile on a stock car?
On a stock car the gain is modest, mostly steadier temperatures in demanding conditions. It becomes more valuable alongside a tune or track use.
